Description

A Half Ounce Gold Britannia coin from the Royal Mint. This is a British bullion gold coin and has a face value of £50. This qualifies it as legal tender, which means this coin and others like it are Capital Gains Tax Free (CGT Exempt).

The Half Ounce Britannia coin contains one-half troy ounce (15.6 grams) of fine gold.

Coins produced prior to 2013 weighed 17 grams, while coins from 2013 onwards weigh 15.6 grams. Both types contain exactly 15.6 grams of fine gold, but pre-2013 the Royal Mint used to add extra metals, such as copper, into their gold coins to make the coins more resilient. As minting technology has improved, mints no longer need to do this and the majority now make bullion coins to maximum purity.
